quilting patterns

I've found a means of 'drawing' a pattern in the areas between the pictures on the skirt which works well, but I'm nervous about the design that I'd come up with.

The line is made by couching over a plyed-up strand of my left over sewing thread ends.

The pattern is inspired by traditional quilting patterns , although the actual motifs reflect some of the collaged shapes from the appliqued pictures. What I'm unsure about is the way the two different scales of images work together, and whether a free-er, more fluid design would bring the applique design together more. Each of the motifs I've done so far has taken 1h 5, but I may have to do a bit more before I can see how the finished surface works.
